Border Vigil Disappointed by Appeals Court Decision Staying Buoy Removal

Eagle Pass, TX – The Border Vigil, a local humanitarian group that gathers monthly to mourn the needless deaths on the Rio Grande, is disappointed at the US Appeals court decision to grant a temporary stay allowing the buoys to remain in the middle of the Rio Grande.

Previously the members of the Border Vigil had celebrated a federal court ruling ordering Texas to remove the barrier by September 15. While the appeals court decision is deeply saddening, the group finds the concertina wire strung along the US side of the Rio Grande to be deadlier than the ineffective buoys. The Border Vigil will continue to advocate for the removal of the razor wire and urges the State of Texas to hold human life in higher regard. A humanitarian approach to the border would have the additional benefit of boosting diplomatic relations between the US and Mexico and beneficial to wildlife and the environment as well. They repeat their call for border security without cruelty.

The group invites the public to join the next Rio Grande Memorial Vigil on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 7 PM at Shelby Park, 220 Main Street, Eagle Pass, TX 78852.

The Border Vigil holds the monthly Rio Grande Memorial Vigil / Vigilia Memorial del Río Bravo in remembrance of the needless loss of life along the Rio Grande. Victims are not named during the vigil, partly because the families are not always able to release the names in time for the vigil at the beginning of each month, but also because many of the dead along the Rio Grande cannot be identified; their names are as lost as their dreams of a better future.
