Celebrating Diversity and Unity: The Border Vigil of Eagle Pass Brings Together Different Cultures and Faiths for a Peaceful Vigil

Eagle Pass, Texas, November 30, 2023 - The Border Vigil of Eagle Pass, a local community group that advocates for a humane and compassionate approach to border safety and immigration issues, will hold the December Rio Grande Memorial Vigil on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 5:00 PM, at Shelby Park, 220 Main Street, Eagle Pass, Texas, 78852. The vigil is co-sponsored by Tsuru Network for Solidarity, First United Methodist Church of Eagle Pass, Iglesia Luterana San Lucas de Eagle Pass, Frontera Ministries Eagle Pass, and Mission Border Hope Eagle Pass.

The vigil is a solemn and peaceful event to remember those who have needlessly perished on our border or gone missing in the month of November, as well as to express solidarity and support for their families and communities. The vigil will feature songs and prayers in English and Spanish.

At past vigils at the end of the service of song and prayer, attendees released white flowers into the Rio Grande. This month they will be releasing Tsuru, origami folded paper cranes, a Japanese symbol of peace and hope.  A key part of the mission of the Tsuru Network for solidarity is to address multigenerational community trauma from state violence. Through the folding of origami tsuru, the network and its partners are reclaiming traditional and spiritual Japanese healing practice. The tsuru at this month's vigil were folded by volunteers at the Tsuru Network for Solidarity with paper donated by World Tree of Peace.

The Border Vigil of Eagle Pass invites the public to join the vigil and share in community healing rituals and to engage in dialogue and advocacy for a humane and compassionate approach to border safety and immigration policy.

Tsuru Network for Solidarity is a nonviolent direct action movement of Japanese American social justice advocates and allies working to end detention sites and support directly impacted immigrant and refugee communities who are being targeted by racist, inhumane immigration policies. The Tsuru Network stands on the moral authority of Japanese Americans who suffered the atrocities and legacies of US concentration camps during WWII and say, "Stop Repeating History!" www.tsuruforsolidarity.org

The Border Vigil holds the monthly Rio Grande Memorial Vigil / Vigilia Memorial del Río Bravo in remembrance of the needless loss of life along the Rio Grande. Victims are not named during the vigil, partly because the families are not always able to release the names in time for the vigil at the beginning of each month, but also because many of the dead along the Rio Grande cannot be identified; their names are as lost as their dreams of a better future. Celebrando La Diversidad Y La Unidad: La Vigilia Fronteriza De Eagle Pass Reúne Diferentes Culturas Y Religiones Para Una Vigilia Pacífica
