Border Vigil Cross Memorial: A Space for Healing and Hope for Border Communities

Event Images

Eagle Pass, TX - December 16, 2023 - The Eagle Pass Border Coalition, Iglesia Luterana San Lucas, and First United Methodist Church are proud to present the Border Vigil Cross Memorial / Vigilia Fronteriza Memorial de las Cruces, a large scale civic engagement piece that remembers the lives of the more than 700 migrants known to have died on the border in 2023. The Border Vigil acknowledges that this is an undercount; forensic experts estimate that the true count may be double or triple the number represented by crosses at Shelby Park.

The installation consists of 700 wooden crosses, each representing a person who perished in their attempt to cross into the United States in search of a better life. The crosses were hand cut by master woodworker Dan McCuistion and painted by high school and college students, clergy, missionaries, and the Eagle Pass community. A number of crosses are tipped with pink or baby blue in memory of the children who have died on the border this last year. The striking array of crosses are arranged over more than half an acre of the Shelby Park ball fields and stir strong emotions. The installation will be in place from December 16, 2023 to January 13, 2024, and the public is invited to visit the site. A closing service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM.

The installation has several goals:

•  To provide a space for healing and hope, especially in this time of trauma, by offering a creative outlet and a collective experience for our community.

•  To remember those who needlessly died on the border, and to acknowledge their humanity and dignity, regardless of their legal status or nationality.

•  To educate and inform the public about the magnitude and the causes of the deaths on the border, and to raise awareness about the humanitarian challenges that the border communities face.

•  To invite the public to come back to Shelby Park, a public space that has been neglected and underutilized due to the militarization of the riverfront as part of Operation Lone Star.

•  To activate and transform the public space, creating opportunities for interaction, dialogue, and participation among diverse groups of people, and fostering a sense of belonging and civic pride.

•  To effect social change, by expressing our dissent for cruel and inhumane policies and advocating for compassion and justice for migrants and us, the residents of this region.

The sponsors of the installation invite the public to visit the memorial, and to join them in their mission to end the deaths and suffering at the border, and to create a more humane and peaceful region.
