Border Community Rallies at Shelby Park to Remember Border Deaths
EAGLE PASS, TX, JANUARY 12, 2024 - The Closing Service of the Cross Memorial in Shelby Park will proceed as planned, say organizers at the Border Vigil in Eagle Pass. Given recent news about the park seizure by the State of Texas, vigil organizers are asking for the help of the public and the media in getting the word out. The service to gather the crosses will be held on Saturday, January 13, at 2:00 PM on the Shelby Park ballfields in Eagle Pass, Texas. The Cross Memorial was installed in December 2016 in remembrance of the 700 people known to have died on the southern border in search of their dreams.
"Yes, we're having the January vigil," says Amerika Garcia Grewal, an organizer with the Border Vigil. "I was contacted by DPS Sergeant Isaac Gonzalez late Thursday afternoon, a few minutes later Staff Sergeant Suzanne Ringle emailed to say 'the community is welcome at the park. Your event will not be impeded.'" Mrs. Grewal went on to say, "We encourage everyone who is bothered by the unnecessary deaths on the border to join us on Saturday at 2PM for the closing of the Cross Memorial. Yes, we want you to join us at Shelby Park."
