Cross Memorial Closing and Removal Service

 Omnipotente Dios

Buscando perdidos me encontraste a mí

Cross Memorial Closing and Removal Service

On Saturday, January 17 at 10:AM we meet to remove the crosses and receive a blessing of song and prayer from local lay leaders and clergy. The service begins promptly at 10 and will be held rain or shine, please dress for the weather.

The Annual Cross Memorial acknowledges all of the known deaths in the previous year.

Those who died following their dream of a better life are remembered on the first Monday of every month, but the annual remembrance brings the toll into focus and is an encouragement for us to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly in the new year. We also want families to know that although their loved ones are gone, they have not been forgotten.

The crosses were hand cut by master woodworker Dan McCuistion and painted by high school and college students, clergy, missionaries, and the Eagle Pass community. A number of crosses are tipped with pink or baby blue in memory of the children who have died on the border last year. The striking array of crosses are arranged over the Shelby Park ball fields and stir strong emotions.

The installation has several goals:

  • To provide a space for healing and hope, especially in this time of trauma, by offering a creative outlet and a collective experience for our community.

  • To remember those who needlessly died on the border, and to acknowledge their humanity and dignity, regardless of their legal status or nationality.

  • To educate and inform the public about the magnitude and the causes of the deaths on the border, and to raise awareness about the humanitarian challenges that the border communities face.

  • To invite the public to come back to Shelby Park, a public space that has been neglected and underutilized due to the militarization of the riverfront as part of Operation Lone Star.

  • To activate and transform the public space, creating opportunities for interaction, dialogue, and participation among diverse groups of people, and fostering a sense of belonging and civic pride.

  • To effect social change, by expressing our dissent for cruel and inhumane policies and advocating for compassion and justice for migrants and us, the residents of this region.
